While fitness classes for Memory Care residents is a novel new concept that has gained a lot of support following new research into Alzheimer’s care options, Live 2 B Healthy® has been conducting Memory Care classes since 2008. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, “Professionals working in dementia care have long observed that exercising at the mid-stages of Alzheimer’s disease helps patients maintain independent living skills, maintain muscle memory, reduce fall risk and promote balance and mobility. Exercise also helps reduce stress, anxiety, depression and insomnia – problems that often affect people in the mid-stages of Alzheimer’s.” [Caregiver Tips & Tools, Edition #19].
Cory Czepa, Live 2 B Healthy® President and Founder, said “Our goals at Live 2 B Healthy ® are not just about maintenance or rehabilitation…We are interested in becoming a Bridge to IMPROVED Wellness. Nowhere is this more evident than in our Memory Care programs.”
Recently, Bill Gates pledged at least $100 million dollars to help fund Alzheimer’s diagnostics and treatments. What is Gates’ personal defense against Alzheimer’s? In a 2016 CNN interview with Dr. Sanja Gupta when asked “Do you do anything differently, now that you have been focused on Alzheimer’s in your own life, in terms of warding off any kind of cognitive decline?”, Gates simply replied, “Well the recommendations that are beneficial are lots of exercise.” You can watch the fascinating interview here.
Live 2 B Healthy® offers Memory Care classes in senior living communities around the nation (see our Class Schedules. Select “Show Filters” and check Memory Care under Lifestyles to see a listing of Memory Care classes offered in your area). Our Memory Care classes are very similar in structure to our regular Strength & Balance classes, with the exception that the classes typically only run 30 minutes in length, as opposed to 45 minutes. Often, the community prefers to keep the class sizes a bit smaller, and will provide additional staff during the class to help ensure that every participant is able to participate to the fullest extent possible.
n 2017, Prairie Senior Cottages partnered with Live 2 B Healthy® at their Willmar location to provide professional, certified group fitness training to their residents. Dustin Lee, PSC’s C.E.O . explained his decision: “I’d seen the research and was aware of the benefits of regular exercise for Alzheimer’s patients.”
In early 2019, pleased with the overwhelmingly positive response from residents, staff and families, Prairie Senior Cottages expanded the Live 2 B Healthy® program to all 7 of their locations.
Recently, Live 2 B Healthy® was provided with the following numbers from the longest-running PSC community (Willmar) indicating the dramatic decline in falls among the residents over the past almost 3 years, since initiating the program:
